FILIPINO FOR TEACHING

We were on the 1st grade when we started to study English subject, it may be on reading or the language itself. A lot of Filipinos struggled in learning and speaking English since they were young, and it is because it is taught in the English language even at the beginning of schooling of the student. If the student is just in the 1st grade, he will surely not understand the English lesson if it is taught in English.

Just like what the host of Good Morning Kuya TV Show have said, “Hindi maiintindihan ng mga bata ang English kung ituturo agad ito gamit ang wikang Ingles”, which if we will analyze, we grade 1 students cannot really understand it in the first place.

What we need to do is to teach the English subject by using our own language until the 3rd grade so that the minds of the students will have at least vocabulary of English words when they reached the 4th grade.

If they will use our own language in teaching, they can have the Filipino translation for every English word that they have heard of and they can clearly understand the thought or meaning of the English sentence. Unlike when the teachers taught the subject using English at the start, there will have a lot of confusions for the student.

But the Head of Filipino Department of UP Diliman, Professor Aura Albano Abiera have mentioned that it’s not just the national language that can be used for teaching, the mother tongue or the language that they grew up on can also be used, such as, Ilocano, Cebuano, Bisaya, and more. It is because people from Visayas and Mindanao cannot understand fluently the Tagalog, which have similarities with Filipino.

If teachers will use the mother tongue, it will be more effective and unimportant since they were used to that language from the day they started speaking. Unlike if teachers will use Filipino in the southern part of the Philippines, it would be complicated because they’re not fluent in Filipino and they will need to translate it and there could be many translations that would happen.

But for the majority or in general, we should use the national language which is Filipino from Kinder to grade 3. People who came from the southern part should also study this language, since it is the one that shows our identity as a Filipino citizen

Since languages were made for communication, why not use Filipino as the medium for teaching and in this way, we can also show how we give important to our own language. Let us use Filipino with everything that we will do inclined to the progress of giving quality education for the youth
